All the fairs George attended gave him an opportunity to see the designs of other potteries and to compare his own work. This time he won a silver medal, the highest award he ever received, but, as usual, no one bought his art ware.

When the exposition closed, he was so broke he couldn’t afford to go home. He might have been bull-headed, but he was also industrious. Hired by the St. Louis school system to train teachers to use the potter’s wheel, he managed to muster enough cash to buy a ticket back to Biloxi.
